Rife grew up around machining and mechanical work, and would go on to build essentially all of his own laboratory apparatus by hand — a habit that defined his later microscopes and instruments. He was consistently self-taught as an instrument maker rather than an academically credentialed scientist.
A note on his title: he is universally called "Dr. Rife," but he did not hold an earned medical degree. The honorific traces to an honorary doctorate cited in period accounts — a distinction worth keeping straight.
